"Each makeup-wearing character has a deliberate palette and style that serves to further their plot lines and character arcs. Additionally, each makeup look has a purposeful emotional meaning behind it. Glitter and rhinestones aren't usually synonymous with 'fun.'"
Because makeup is one of the most powerful forms of self-expression we have, perhaps especially during our adolescence when we aren't always able to experiment with much else, the beauty looks in this film are especially important in revealing what the characters are feeling and experiencing at any given time.
Because of social media, today's youth are utilising cosmetics to express themselves on a larger scale than ever before. By embracing entire freedom of expression and rejecting beauty and cosmetic standards, Gen Z is fundamentally reinventing what makeup can and should be used for.
